Pulaski Highway – NJ DOT
R. J. Watson was selected by Cornell & Company, Inc. in 2018 to supply Disktron bearings for a New Jersey Dept. of Transportation project on Rte. 1 & 9 at two locations in Newark (West of the Passaic River), and Jersey City (East of the Hackensack River). The $14.7M contract will repair deteriorated elements and introduce multi-rotational disc bearings to the rocker bents to accommodate thermal movement, and reduce forces on the existing structure. The disc bearings for this project ranged from 250 kips to 650 kips of vertical service load with a 10% to 11% horizontal service load. The longitudinal displacement for the expansion bearings ranged from 8″ to 10″, and the Transverse displacement ranged from 0.05” to 2″. The service rotational capacity ranged from +/- 0.02 radians to +/- 0.035 radians.
The consulting engineer for this design-bid-build project was a joint venture of Greenman Pedersen, Inc., and HNTB Corp.
This project was completed in July of 2019.
